Bank statements for visa applications: 6 things officers look for
It isn't just about the closing balance. Here's how visa officers read your statements — and how to avoid red flags.

Your bank statement tells the story of your finances. Officers use it to judge whether you can afford the trip and whether you're likely to return.
What officers look for
- A steady balance over the last six months, not a sudden spike.
- Regular income that matches your salary slips or business turnover.
- Explained large deposits — gifts, property sales or maturities should come with proof.
- Enough funds to cover the trip cost you declare.
- Bank stamp and signature, or an e-statement the embassy accepts.
- Consistency with your ITR and employment documents.
Avoid these red flags
Don't park a large amount in your account just before applying. Unexplained deposits make officers suspect borrowed funds.
